The successful, German, bike brand BULLS released an updated version of the E- STREAM EVO AM 45 for 2019. It’s an all-mountain (AM), Class-3 electric mountain bike that can reach speeds of up to 28mph (45kph)! 150mm of suspension travel, both front and back, means you can send it down whichever trail you’re brave enough to attack. Rock gardens, fire roads or ratcheting up some boulders, it does it all.
A full suspension mountain bike, but better!
One of the most significant benefits you’ll notice is how much faster you can ride to the trail without exhausting yourself. Even at 56 lbs., it’s easier than ever to climb up some of those steep gradients. The 350W Brose motor produces 90Nm of torque that you can feel propelling you forward through every pedal stroke. The E-STREAM EVO 45 is a top choice electric mountain bike, especially with the Shimano Deore XT 2x drivetrain. It gives you the comfort of 22 gears to choose from for better cadence, gear selection, and overall efficiency. Battery life isn’t a huge concern with the BULLS because they offer a 37v/17.5a/650wh battery capable of about 100 miles in optimal conditions. It comes with a fast 5amp charger that gets you from zero to 100 percent battery life in 4.5 hours. For 3.5 hours, you can expect about 80 percent batter life. New for 2019 are 203mm Magura MT5e hydraulic disc brakes, MonkeyLink magnetic wired-in light connections, bottle adapter, and a rubber plate for better protection of the battery and motor casing. Most notable is how effective the Magura brakes are. It’s a significant improvement over the previous models’ Tektro Dorado disc brakes.
Fast – Comfortable – Efficient – Affordable?
At $5499, we think it can be classified as one of the best electric mountain bikes in 2019. We were blown away by how smooth and quiet the new Brose Drive TF motor is. Besides accelerating at light speed, you’ll barely even feel like you’re on an e-bike. A mountain bike with 22 gears and a motor is a match made in MTB heaven. The addition of the Monkeylink is convenient for attaching or removing the fixed lights and charging up your computer or phone on the go. Although it doesn’t come with a dropper post like some of the other options or brands out there, the EVO makes up for it in other ways.
How is the ride feel?
Testing the E-STREAM EVO AM 45 through the streets of Culver City and the Santa Monica mountains was nothing short of thrilling. Climbing up the Sullivan Canyon trail leading to Backbone, was a perfect stomping ground to put the BULLS through its paces. The sturdy, aluminum frame holds its own on gnarly trails and pot-hole ridden streets. Although the aluminum construction is not as light as a carbon frame, you won’t feel the weight as much when taking corners at speed or hitting those tight berms. You’ll want to be a bit more aware of your speed though. Yes, even with the 27.5″ x 2.8″ wide tires. Just remember that you’re sitting on a bike with a powerful motor pushing a fast electric mountain bike down sketchy terrain. If you’ve never ridden an eMTB in the mountains, it’s a ton of fun once you get used to the power.
Everything is pretty intuitive on the BULLS. You can power it on by pressing the top button on the battery or the top of the display panel. To adjust the speed and power, press the up and down buttons that are on the display panel as well. In case you get stuck or find yourself on a gradient too steep for a billy goat, the walk mode is easily accessible there as well.
Let’s talk about the look
It has clean lines with contrasting red accents that compliment a predominantly glossy grey frame. The battery and motor are tucked away nicely, which gives you less of the “I’m riding an e-bike” feeling. The cockpit is clean, and you can read the display pretty well in most lighting conditions. You’ll find readouts for power levels up to 4, speed, battery level, lights, and walk-assist. The massive Schwalbe Nobby Nic’s help to carry its dominant presence in the mountains and on the road.
So who’s this bike for?
This electric bike is for everyone from the experienced trail rider, to someone that needs a bombproof, electric commuter bike. Even though everything, including the battery, is integrated, you can still remove it easily for charging in your office or at home.
