The evolving sport of cycling is continuously changing into one of the best forms of transportation, meanwhile continuing to make its mark on aerobic exercise. Here are a few things to keep in mind, and 5 tips for bike commuters to keep you safe on the road.
It’s good for you!
Not only is cycling a low impact sport, meaning it’s easier and can cause less strain, but it’s also been proven to reduce your risk of cardiovascular diseases.
Better Health Channel states that “Regular cycling stimulates and improves your heart, lungs, and circulation, reducing your risk of cardiovascular diseases.”
The extensive health benefits include:
- Better mood
- Active lifestyle
- Healthy habits
- Reduced anxiety, depression, and stress levels
- Decreased body fat
- and more…
There will probably be another article talking about the wealth of benefits within cycling, but today’s focus will be on something that should be talked about a bit more often.
Safety While Commuting
Some avid cyclists are commuters, but not all commuters may consider themselves cyclists. One thing that is shared between them, though, is the awareness of safety while cycling.
Fear not, because below, I’ve included a few tips to help you stay safe while you’re cycling through the city. For the purpose of this article, we’ll prioritize commuting, but know that these things can be applied to any person that rides a bike.
#1: Be Seen All the Time
You may think that cars driving by with their lights on will be able to see you. Truth is, that’s not always the case. Plus, it’s not just the cars you have to worry about.
Other commuters and pedestrians may not see you riding down the road if you’re cycling without lights at night. As the season’s change and the evening light starts to fade, one of the most essential bike commuter tips is to stay visible. That means to buy a set of lights that are bright enough to be seen – even on those dense, evenings with the marine layer.
Another great option is to invest in some reflective gear. Whether it’s a hi-viz jacket, reflective backpack, or leg straps, anything that “shines bright like a diamond,” will do.
#2: Regular Safety Checks – Why Aren’t My Brakes Working?
Have you ever gotten a safety check on your bike? At The Bike Shop California, a Safety Check includes an adjustment to your gears, brakes, and a general “once over” to make sure everything is in tip-top shape and safe to ride. It’s recommended that you get one every few months if you’re commuting a lot.
Picture this – You’re riding to work, the lights are all green, and you’re in the perfect flow. You’re sticking to your side of the lane, minding your own business. Then, it happens. You’re flying down the bike path, and someone steps into the lane. Your hands clamp down on the brake levers and your bike skids to a stop. The person keeps walking (as they usually do), and you thank yourself for getting that safety check last week.
You wouldn’t let the brakes wear down on your car, right? It’s just as essential to check the brakes on your bike, especially if it is replacing your vehicle.
#3: Dress for the occasion – Trust me
The weather can have a significant influence, depending on where your daily commute takes you. Even in Santa Monica and Culver City, where our two shops are, the temperatures can fluctuate as the sun is setting.
Being prepared for the elements is part of bike commuter tip number three. Every now and then, the weather can turn sour, so having a light rain jacket in your bag will help you a ton! If it’s warm out, dressing in light, breathable clothing will save you from getting to work and needing a second shower.
To Kit, or Not to Kit?
In case you were wondering, it’s perfectly fine to dress in “normal” clothes for a commute. It is purely preference when cyclists or commuters choose to wear a full cycling kit. Just remember that cycling clothes are specifically designed to support you on your rides. Mainly, the sensitive areas…So don’t be afraid to try on a pair of bib shorts to see if it’s your thing or not.
#4: Know how and where to lock your bike
Every commuter’s nightmare is to lock their bike, go to work, come back, and realize someones stole their wheels! The only thing left is a damaged lock and, well, a broken heart. To prevent that from happening, there are a couple of things that you can do.
The first step is to buy a GOOD lock! Something like the Kryptonite Evolution series is a good place to start. We carry a variety of U-Locks and chain locks at both of our locations.
Once you have a lock, make sure it’s long enough to fit around your rear wheel, frame and whatever you’re locking it to. Ideally, it’s best to have your front wheel locked as well. Either the wheel off and lock it with the rear, or just get another lock. What’s worse? Carrying a little extra weight, or losing your prized possession?
Another expert tip is to do your best to lock your bike in front of stores that aren’t overly crowded outside and have glass windows. Very specific, I know, but it’s helpful! Mainly, it’s so that people inside can see if someone is out there prying at your ride.
#5: Wear A Helmet!
There’s so much, yet so little to write about here because it should be self-explanatory. Every person driving in a metal box with wheels has protection. You, on the other hand, do not. Therefore, the safest thing you can do as a bike commuter, whether it’s on a road bike, electric bike, commuter bike, or anything with wheels, is it wear a helmet. Protect your precious brain and I promise you’ll feel a whole lot safer as well.
BONUS TIP!: Have Fun
One of the reasons cycling is so beneficial is because it’s a very enjoyable way to move around town and stay in shape. It releases endorphins which bring an overall sense of joy and wellbeing. A key to being safe is not feeling scared. So go out there and enjoy that ride to work.
Where Do I Get Everything?
Feel free to stop by one of our locations to see what we have in store that can help keep you safe on your commutes. We carry everything from your locks to your helmet and lights. All of our staff are knowledgable in all the areas mentioned above.
Hopefully, you were able to take something away from this and if you’d like us to elaborate on some point or add some more, feel free to let us know.
As always, have fun, and ride safe!
